Tamil Nadu tightens regulations on online real money gaming

Tamil Nadu Online Gaming Regulations

The Tamil Nadu Online Gaming Authority (TNOGA) has introduced stringent new regulations to oversee online real money gaming in the state, tightening access and imposing safeguards to protect users, particularly minors.

The new rules prohibit minors from participating in real money gaming, and make know-your-customer (KYC) verification mandatory for account creation. Aadhaar (unique identity card) authentication, followed by a one-time password (OTP) sent to registered mobile numbers, will also be required for logging into gaming platforms. These measures aim to enhance security and prevent unauthorised access.

The TNOGA defines an online real money game as one where players deposit cash or kind for potential winnings. To curb excessive gaming, platforms must show caution messages after an hour and allow users to set monetary limits. Gaming sites are mandated to prominently display warnings about the addictive nature of online gaming.

A significant provision in the new regulations is the restriction of gaming hours, prohibiting access between 12 midnight and 5am. The rules have come into effect from the date of their publishing in the official gazette.

The rules, however, do not yet cover where the games are accessed via VPNs or platforms in other states, and other such possible issues.
