Korean firm Lee & Ko has hired former chief prosecutor Hoo Gon Kim as a managing partner and head of the criminal defence team to meet the needs of its clients in this practice area, senior managing partner Sang Gon Kim has told Asia Business Law Journal.

In his role as the head of the criminal defence team, Hoo Gon Kim would be responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the litigation and investigation practices, said Sang Gon Kim. As one of the managing partners, he would act on behalf of Lee & Ko and represent the firm through attendance at events hosted by media or governmental agencies, added Sang Gon Kim.

Hoo Gon Kim has more than 27 years of experience as a prosecutor, mainly in special investigations. He held the position of chief prosecutor for the First Division of Special Investigations at the Seoul Central District Prosecutors’ Office. His last post was as chief prosecutor in the Seoul High Prosecutors’ Office, where he served until his retirement in 2022.

He will officially join the firm on 15 September as head of the criminal defence team and one of the managing partners. Sang Gon Kim noted that his main focus would be on white-collar crime.

With his experience serving as a legal adviser for the Korea Communications Commission, Hoo Gon Kim was an expert in telecommunications, media and technology, said Sang Gon Kim.
