Law Firm Awards
2025
India’s definitive legal awards celebrate innovation, expertise and excellence
6 May 2025
it has been a big year for Indian law firms. A dynamic economy saw frenzied dealmaking, a booming IPO market and robust growth across diverse sectors, including finance, technology and renewable energy. At the same time, a slew of new rules and regulations, notably the new data privacy regime, revised Competition Commission of India notification thresholds and amended Insolvency and Bankruptcy Board of India regulations, stimulated demand for sophisticated legal advice – all while the spectre of AI threatened to upend law firms’ business models and drive forward the modernisation of the legal profession. Some law firms excelled in embracing these challenges. Others did not. However, many firms racked up a significant number of notable achievements.

India Business Law Journal’s Law Firm Awards celebrate these achievements. This year, Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas takes the coveted award for Law Firm of the Year for its comprehensive excellence across multiple practice areas and innovative approach to legal service delivery. Six standout law firms are recognised as Best Overall Law Firms: AZB & Partners, Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas, JSA, Khaitan & Co, Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co and Trilegal – each demonstrating a remarkable breadth of expertise and consistent excellence in client service.
Our awards span 38 practice-area categories, reflecting the increasingly specialised nature of legal work in India’s maturing market. There are seven winners of equal standing in most award categories. To better reflect the depth of expertise in the market, certain categories have been divided into two tiers: one for firms with 100 lawyers or fewer, and the other for firms with more than 100 lawyers. This has enabled us to recognise the vital contributions of several mid-sized and boutique firms, whose focused expertise and client-centric approaches offer compelling alternatives in an increasingly competitive market.
Our judging process involved careful analysis of thousands of nominations from in-house counsel, corporate executives and legal professionals worldwide, as well as detailed submissions from Indian law firms across the spectrum. Meanwhile, our editors contacted more than 1,000 client references for independent assessments of candidate law firms. More information on the judging methodology can be found here.

JUDGING THE AWARDS
India Business Law Journal’s Law Firm Awards have been presented annually since 2009. The results are based on nominations and qualitative information received from in-house counsel and other senior corporate executives in India and around the world, as well as from India-focused lawyers at foreign law firms. Submissions from Indian law firms contributed to the judging process.
A nomination form was posted on our website in February and March and shared widely by email and social media. Nominations were received from hundreds of Indian and international companies and international law firms, including: Adani Group, Agility Ventures, Air Liquide, Akasa Air, Ansal Properties & Infrastructure, Australia and New Zealand Banking Group, Axis Bank, Axis Max Life Insurance, Bafna Realty, Bajaj Capital, Balaji Infra Projects, BC Jindal Group, BharatPe, Bharti Enterprises, Billion Broadcasters, Bird & Bird, BizzHub Ventures, Blue Star Limited, Bombay Stock Exchange, Brookfield Advisors India Private Limited, Chaitanya Energy, Davies Collison Cave, DBI Capital Markets & Securities, Delta Corp, Divyanshi Aviation Services, Eros Group, Foley & Lardner, Frost Brown Todd, Garg Healthcare, GlaxoSmithKline, Global Wind Infrastructure & Services, Government of Himachal Pradesh, GrowthAXL, HCL Technologies, Hero Enterprise, Honda, IDRCL (India Debt Resolution Company Ltd), Indian Hotels Company, Isuzu Motors, ITI Growth Opp Fund, K Raheja Realty Group, Kanwar Enterprises, Lemontree Hotels, Lions Clubs International, Longan Law Firm, Malhotra Group, MapmyIndia, Mastercard, Metro Brands, Mishcon de Reya, Mondelez, Morgan Lewis & Bockius, Music Broadcast Limited, Narayana Health, Nippon Koei, Nordex, Norton Rose Fulbright, ONGC Videsh, Oryxion, Patanjali Foods, PayTM, Pegasus India Evolving Opportunities Fund, Pinsent Masons, Razorpay, Restaurant Brands, Rico Auto Industries, Sammaan Capital, Seville Food Products, Shapoorji Pallonji Energy, Shipping Corporation of India, SpiceJet, Star India, Sterlite Power Transmission, Super Smelters, Tata Chemicals, Tata Communications, Vandana Aircraft Services, Verder Group, Vilela Coelho, VizPay, Voltas, Wellspring Healthcare, Women in Sport India, Yes Bank and many more.
Indian law firms were not permitted to make nominations. However, all major Indian law firms were invited to make submissions in support of their candidacy for awards. The submissions included details of the firm’s achievements in law firm development and in key practice areas, as well as a peer assessment. These submissions, combined with reference checks and research by IBLJ’s editorial team, played a supporting role in the judging process. All Indian law firms were automatically eligible for inclusion in the awards process, regardless of whether they made a submission.
As always, there were no entry fees, submission charges or any other requirements for entry. There is also no awards dinner that winners are required to pay to attend. There are seven winners in most categories, six Best Overall Law Firms and one Law Firm of the Year. To better reflect the depth of expertise in the market, certain categories have been divided into two sections: one for firms with 100 lawyers or fewer, and the other for firms with more than 100 lawyers.
It is important to note that the IBLJ Law Firm Awards are not comprehensive rankings of the leading law firms in each practice area. While rankings typically list all the top-tier firms in each category, each of our awards has a limited number of winners. As a result, many leading law firms do not win awards, and their absence does not reflect negatively on their achievements and expertise.
