Introduction

With nearly 25 years of experience, JJ Chan is the managing partner of CBE, a distinguished litigator and pre-eminent counsel. He handles niche litigation, with special interest in financial lines, medical negligence, insurance/reinsurance, corporate, directors’ and officers’ liability, acting for institutional clients across Malaysia, Singapore, and the UK, etc.

JJ is an author, speaker and educator, having conducted more than 100 talks/briefings on significant legal developments, written several articles and publications on topics ranging from medical negligence to corporate, directors’ and officers’ liability matters. He is author of a booklet entitled Landmark Cases on Medical Negligence, and a book entitled Directors & Officers Liability Insurance: Selected Articles, Cases and Materials with D&O expert Kevin LaCroix — the first publication of its kind in the Asia-Pacific region.

Notable career achievements include JJ representing more than 80 healthcare institutions, international insurers/reinsurers, and government-linked companies. He regularly engages with top educational institutions as well as government ministries.

Apart from being named in ABLJ’s Malaysia A-List this year, he was also named in Asia’s Top 30 Litigators and Asia’s Super 50 Disputes Lawyers 2025 by Asian Legal Business (ALB), as well as being recognised in the ALB Malaysia and Southeast Asia Law Awards 2025.

He holds the distinction of being the first and only Malaysian lawyer recognised across these prestigious awards and rankings, and the first from Penang to be recognised in any of them – let alone all five.

JJ has been recognised in both local and international media, including a full-page feature in Malaysian government media, and an interview published by his alma mater, Inns of Court School of Law (ICSL) as well as an upcoming feature with Gray’s Inn, London. This is the first time ICSL and Gray’s Inn has recognised a legal practitioner from Malaysia.

He also contributes to society as he is involved in various charitable, healthcare and cultural endeavours. He also holds positions in not-for-profit and charitable organisations, which organise cultural, charitable and welfare programmes for the underprivileged.
