Shin & Kim has deepened its financial regulatory practice bench with the addition of new partner Seongkoo Cheong, who is an expert on derivatives regulations in South Korea, to lead the firm’s financial regulation team.
Cheong was most recently the chief compliance officer of South Korean web3 blockchain company EQBR Holdings, and the chief executive officer of its Singapore subsidiary, EQBR Networks Pte Ltd, Shin & Kim told Asia Business Law Journal.
Prior to joining EQBR, he had practised at Kim & Chang from 2005 to 2022, where he was a key partner in the finance and privacy area, including capital markets, banking, derivatives, financial data protection and financial technology. Earlier in his career, he had also worked as an associate on the finance team of Yulchon from 1999 to 2005.
Qualified in South Korea and New York, Cheong specialises in advising on financial regulations, capital markets, derivatives transactions as well as data protection and digital finance. He has, in the past, advised the Financial Services Commission and the Ministry of Justice on the enactment of the Act on Electronic Registration of Stocks and Bonds.
The financial regulatory specialist has also advised the Financial Services Commission on amendments to the Credit Information Use and Protection Act and the Electronic Financial Transactions Act.
